How Freddy's Honors National Military Appreciation Month
Freddy Simon, the namesake of our restaurant, served in World War II. During his service, he was awarded both the Purple Heart for injuries sustained during service and a Bronze Star for valor. In his honor and in recognition of the millions of Americans who have served throughout history and today, we want to help raise awareness of and engagement in National Military Appreciation Month. Please keep reading to learn more about this month-long observance, as well as how you might show your thanks to current members and veterans of the United States Armed Forces.
What is National Military Appreciation Month?
National Military Appreciation Month is a designated time to honor individuals who have served or are currently serving in the U.S. Armed Forces. Established by Congress in 1999, this month encourages not only the awareness of the importance and sacrifices of these individuals but also the expressions of gratitude, support and recognition owed to them. May also includes other important days and events for members of the military and their families, including Military Spouse Appreciation Day and Memorial Day. Learn more about this month at Veteran.com.
In addition to making an extra effort to show appreciation and recognition during this month, it’s important to continue this support throughout the year. At Freddy’s, one way in which we do this is by partnering with Folds of Honor. Since 2007, Folds of Honor has been providing scholarships to spouses and children of America’s fallen or disabled service members. Recently, this organization has also expanded its offerings to include families of America’s first responders. Rated a four-star charity at Charity Navigator and holding the Guidestar Platinum Seal, Folds of Honor was founded by Lt Col Dan Rooney. To date, this non-profit has provided over 60,000 scholarships. Freddy’s began working with Folds of Honor in 2022, with a month-long fundraiser program available in Freddy’s franchises across the country.
How to Celebrate National Military Appreciation Month
To help you prepare for National Military Appreciation Month in May, Veteran.com shares 10 ideas for how to honor and support current members of the military and veterans. Personal thank you notes and social media support are two quick and easy options. However, there are a few other ways you might treat the individuals who have chosen to protect you and the country. Here’s how your local Freddy’s may be able to assist you in these efforts!
1. Express your appreciation on-site or in line! During National Military Appreciation Month or any other month, you may encounter fellow diners who may be in uniform. Share a personal thank you on this occasion or surprise this individual or their entire party by paying for their meal.
2. Give a gift card! To a military spouse who is caring for kids or a friend who has served, a gift card for a restaurant that they like is a thoughtful way to acknowledge their contributions and commitment.
3. Organize a meal designed to honor and thank those who are serving or have served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Catering is the perfect choice for these occasions, as it enables everyone to enjoy a delicious meal and make the most of their time together. Whether you are gathering friends and family together to celebrate a loved one or recognizing the individuals who are part of your business or organization, this act of gratitude is one way to show how much you value them and their service.
4. Donate directly to an organization like Folds of Honor that supports military personnel, veterans or their families. At Folds of Honor, choose a one-time gift, commit to a monthly donation or sponsor an entire scholarship. There is also an opportunity to give a gift in honor or memory of someone.
